In an article on Hollywood’s most up-and-coming writers, Variety has indicated that Marvel’s Megan McDonnell has moved across to join the writing team of Tomb Raider for Amazon Prime.
The WandaVision, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and The Marvels co-writer will work on the upcoming live-action TV series based on the popular video game series. She recently finished work on the Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly-led sci-fi series Dark Matter based on the novel by Blake Crouch.
McDonnell is a Harvard undergraduate with an MFA from USC. She started as a producer on John August and Craig Mazin’s Scriptnotes podcast. From there she went on to be story editor for the Disney+ Marvel series WandaVision. From there she was the first writer brought onto The Marvels and was a consulting producer for Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. She prides herself on her non-traditional approach to writing:
“I love to do something unusual with form. I aim to surprise, and I try to write things that I want to watch.”
She says she most frequently draws inspiration from her own life:
“Most of my stories start with whatever funk or crisis or feeling I’m living in, then I figure out how to explore that through speculative fiction.”
Tomb Raider will be show-run by Indiana Jones And The Dial of Destiny pox Phoebe Waller-Bridge and form part of a larger cinematic universe. There will be an associated movie and a video game. It is not, however, attached to the new Netflix animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
