Paramount Pushing RED RISING

When I first saw this news, my first thought was that Paramount, owners of the Tom Clancy rights, were going to make a Red Storm Rising adaptation. Unfortunately, that is not the case. This is Red Rising.

It is Pierce Brown’s best-selling dystopian sci-fi novel series that mixes Roman mythology motifs with a future sci-fi setting. Red Rising is set on Mars, where society is set up in a color-coded class system, with the Golds at the very top.

Darrow, a young miner, is a Red, the lowest on the ladder, and a people who exist to do hard labor. After a personal tragedy reveals the truth about the society he toils within, Darrow infiltrates the Gold society with an aim to bring it down from the inside, but all is not quite as it seems.

The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence is already attached. Writer Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate… uh oh!), who worked with Lawrence on the Bioshock project at Netflix, is also onboard. They will develop the script together, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount snared the project after a previous film adaptation at Universal that fell through. The Red Rising series comprises of six books, with a seventh on the way. More than six million copies have been sold.

Lawrence, Francesco Goedhuis, and Cameron MacConomy will produce.
