Thanks to the release of Avengers Endgame: Encore with additional footage that leads to Avengers: Doomsday, the Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga-capping movie has once again dethroned Avatar as the top-grossing movie of all time at the global box office.
Avengers: Endgame now stands at $2.9255 billion against Avatar’s $2.9237 billion.
Hollywood tradition, dating back to when Star Wars went past Jaws to become the top-grossing movie of all time, now dictates that the movie that is handing over the ranking congratulates the new leader at the box office.
Avatar director James Cameron has done that with some new artwork of Iron Man being welcomed by Na’vi.
This is the second time Endgame has taken the record from Avatar. Back in July 2019 it first passed the long-time champion, then re-releases in March 2021 pushed Avatar back in front.
Since the original release of Endgame, the box office landscape has shifted considerably with the rapid rise of streaming, the COVID pandemic, and a new generation of potential theater-goers raised as digital natives on TikTok and YouTube, so the release of Avengers: Doomsday will be watched with interest to see if power franchises have still got it.
