You might not know the name Phil Tippett, but you know his work. Tippett is a legendary stop motion animator and visual effects artist. He has worked on movies like The Empire Strikes Back, The Golden Child, Willow, Jurassic Park, Starship Troopers, and Evolution; the list just goes on and on.
Tippett’s studio has been running for over 35 years. However, he’s recently announced that he will be closing the studio and selling everything off. As I look into this, it turns out it’s a liquidation sale.
Tippett’s studio has been going through a financial stretch. In 2024, he agreed to sell a majority stake to Indian VFX company PhantomFX. This was just before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy later in the year.
PhantomFX completed its acquisition in July 2025 following a court-confirmed reorganisation plan, leading to the studio’s ultimate closure.
Tippett himself isn’t retiring, not just yet. In an interview with CBS, he said:
“We had almost a 40-year run. It was a good run. I will die with my sword in my hand.”
So, he remains resolute about still working. He was a consultant on Mando & Grogu.
