The first trailer has dropped for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil. The creator behind Barbarian and Weapons has been handed the key to the zombie franchise, and here’s the first look at what he’s come up with.
I like teaser trailers. There’s much less risk of them giving too much away. It lets you get a feel for the movie without ruining it, so you can make a decision on whether to see it relatively spoiler free.
I’m sold on this one, but I won’t be watching any more trailers.
Zach Cregger’s screenplay for Resident Evil is an original story featuring no characters from the video games. He had this to say on the matter:
This is a story that I would’ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox.
So is it an original idea retrofitted to Resident Evil because everything has to be an IP these days? Fair enough I suppose, if it enabled him to get it made. Zach Cregger has declared his movie to be ‘a love letter to the games,’ which he has played, so I guess we’ll see how well it fits the lore of the games.
The zombie genre is arguably played out. Can Zach Cregger find something interesting to say with this one? As we previously reported, the movie runs to a tight 90-minutes with an emphasis on forward momentum. In a world of bloated runtimes, that’s a definite selling point.
