You know what’s funny? Other people getting hurt. Slapstick has been a staple of cinema for many years, and you cannot help but think of Jackass.
Yes, Johnny Knoxville has sold out, but back in the day, he and the guys were funny. The best thing about watching Jackass was knowing it wasn’t you. They were either being covered in poop or having their nipples bitten by snakes.
I have a childish sense of humour, and these ‘stunts’ just appealed to me.
All of the guys seemed like you could be mates with them: Johnny, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Wee Man, Preston Lacy, Dave England, Ehren McGrehey, and Ryan Dunn. The only person I wouldn’t have wanted to be friends with is Bam Margera. He always seemed like the one mate who took things too far.
In the last Jackass movie, they added new members, Zach Holmes, Sean McInerney, Rachel Wolfson and Davon Wilson. I’ve no idea why they added them; they added nothing to the movie.
The Best and Last
So, this is the final Jackass movie; probably in the same way that the Rolling Stones have had a ‘final tour’. It genuinely does seem to be the last movie, as Knoxville gets emotional.
The movie starts with the stunt that was never aired (as per my understanding). Knoxville puts on a bulletproof vest and shoots himself in the chest. Remember, please don’t try that at home; it’s a bloody stupid thing to do.
This new movie is simply a review of some of the ‘stunts’ they did over the past 25 years, with some new stuff. The new stuff includes things like drinking laxatives and then playing Twister. Don’t worry though, they have plastic trousers on which are taped at the ankles.
Is it childish and stupid? Yes. Was I laughing? Yes.
When I heard about another Jackass movie, I rolled my eyes, probably the same way you did. Now that the movie is on digital, I couldn’t help but watch it, and you know what, I enjoyed it.
Don’t Make Them Like That Anymore
Modern comedy is not great. Everyone is terrified of saying the wrong thing and triggering someone. The new ‘writers’ just aren’t that funny. In fact, I’m struggling to think of the best last comedy I watched. It wasn’t the new Scary Movie, that’s for sure!
This new Jackass movie took me back to the good old days. A bunch of guys doing stupid stuff, getting hurt and making you laugh. Does the movie sprinkle in ‘memberberries? Yes, but then, that’s a good thing.
Seeing men hurting their balls is funny. If it happened to me, I wouldn’t laugh, but I hope I would provide comedy to someone else. They guys dial this up to 11.
Overall
This Best and Last is just what you expect it to be; some of the best bits, interviews with the guys, and new stunts. Honestly, the old stuff was better than the new stuff, but it’s all still good fun.
I liked that Bam wasn’t in this one, only in archive footage. As I said, I just don’t like the guy. Everyone is having fun till Bam turns up, and someone gets hurt. In one of the older clips, they had him locked in a dark room with a ‘snake’.
It was giving me schadenfreude to see him really scared.
It was also sad to see Dunn in archive footage. Again, he seemed like one of the guys that you would have as a mate.
I just read that one stunt they were trying to do was put a glowing ‘ball’ in Dave England’s ballsack. He only has one ball, and they wanted to put a glowing one inside him. The lawyers said no; killjoys.
Today, a new ‘Jackass’ just wouldn’t work. There are TikTok challenges that end up killing people. The original worked because, at the time, it was shocking. Kids today see worse stunts on the Tellytubbies.
I like Jackass: The Best and Last. Yes, it was a nostalgia trip, but I did find myself laughing out loud at it. I wouldn’t say the guys went out with a ‘bang’, just more of a traditional salute from an old vet.
If you like the original Jackass movies and show, you’ll like this one. A solid 3.5 out of 5 from me.
