RIP Diane Keaton

Even more sad news this morning, Dian Keaton has passed away at the age of 79. There is no news on her cause of death, but she had been battling skin cancer and eating disorders for a long time.

Rising to fame in the 1970s, she was already an accomplished actor on Broadway. She was known for starring in Woody Allen’s stage hit Play It Again Sam, where the two of them became romantically involved.

In 1972, Keaton shot to superstardom when she played Kat Adams in The Godfather, parts 1, 2 and 3. She plays the tormented girlfriend of Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino.

Even though Keaton and Allen split up as a couple, they carried on working together, in movies like Play It Again Sam (1972), Sleeper (1973) and Love and Death (1975). The collaboration with Allen would see her win an Oscar for her role in Annie Hall in 1977.

Keaton also became a style icon for her off-kilter fashion sense. She was a huge influence over younger, aspiring actresses. Moving from more comic roles with Allen, she also took on more sombre projects, like Looking for Mr Goodbar (1977), Interiors (1978) and Manhattan (1979).

She won a second Oscar in 1981, for her role in Reds. It was a political drama directed and written by Warren Beatty.

Over the years, she also starred in movies like Radio Days, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Plan B, Something’s Gotta Give, Book Club, Finding Dory, to name a few.

I’ve missed a few titles off that list, but what are your favourite roles from her?

Until the End

Keaton worked up till 2024, where she starred in Summer Camp, alongside Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard and Eugine Levy. According to the IMDb, she still has movies in production.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends, and I’ll leave with a quote from Keaton:

I had a career and I came to motherhood late and am not married and have never had such a trusting relationship with a man – and trust is where the real power of love comes from.

Diane Keaton passed away at 79.
