Steven Spielberg was, for a long time, the undisputed King of the big summer blockbuster. From Jaws and Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Jurassic Park to War Of The Worlds, a big summer movie with the beard attached was a sign of a good time. Then, after a while, it wasn’t.
Amazingly, according to the report this morning, it turns out his last big summer release that performed was Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
A report in Variety (via Dark Horizons) now says that Spielberg will be back in a summer release slot for an as-yet-unconfirmed big blockbuster. This project is scheduled for a May 15th, 2026 release date.
Jurassic Park, The Lost World, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones 4 frequent collaborator David Koepp is writing whatever this is. Some speculate that this confirms those rumors that Spielberg was working on an original UFO-themed adventure.
The interesting nugget in the report is the reference to Universal being so confident in the new film that they don’t care who they go up against. They have even scheduled it between Marvel’s Avengers 5 on May 1st, and The Mandalorian and Grogu on May 22nd.
However, given the recent trajectory of Marvel and Star Wars, this might not be much competition.
His last project was The Fabelmans, which won critical acclaim and awards but did fuck all at the box office.
