Streaming Review: DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

I’m going to say it, I don’t like going to the cinema much anymore. It costs a small fortune, the food is expensive, there are 30 minutes of adverts before the movie, and there are other people there.

For those reasons, I didn’t see Deadpool & Wolverine at the cinema.

Wrenage did a review, which you can read here. Now it’s out on streaming, I thought I’d offer a different viewpoint. I managed to stay away from most of the spoilers and cameos and I won’t be spoiling anything here.

Seeing the cameos are great and some of them were a great surprise.

You know the main details about this, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hilderbrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Leslie Uggams and Karan Soni.

Anyone else I mention will spoil things.

Shawn Levy directs and writes, alongside Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. The rest of the writing credits, again, spoil things.

The Story

I actually didn’t mind the story for Deadpool & Wolverine. The official plot is:

Deadpool is offered a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority, but instead recruits a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction.

The TVA tell Deadpool that his timeline is disappearing because he’s not the main player in it, Wolverine is. Because Wolverine died in Logan, Deadpool is going to disappear.

The only way to save himself is to find another Wolverine, from a different timeline, and bring him to Deadpool’s timeline.

We all know a lot of the whole ‘timeline’ stuff doesn’t work, (see The Flash), but here, it does.

I think it only works because of breaking the fourth wall. They make jokes about Disney, 20th Century Fox, the state of cinema, and TV shows in general.

The Subplot

Then there is a subplot. The TVA send Deadpool and Wolverine to the void. A place where all ‘superheroes’ are sent when their time is up.

There is Cassandra Nova (Corrin), who runs the place. She’s the hottest bald chick since Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Nova is happy enough ruling the void but has plans to get out and ruin all of the universes. Deadpool and Wolverine have to stop her, but still escape the void. I would say that Nova is the main antagonist in this, but there is a little more to it, but again, I’ll not spoil it.

The Fights

Let’s face it, this movie isn’t really about the plot, it’s about seeing Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds and Jackman, on screen, fight, quipping and generally having fun.

This is exactly what the movie delivers. Before the guys face off for the first time, Deadpool looks at the camera and says:

“Get your special sock out nerds. It’s gonna get good!”

There are a couple of good fights between the guys and they are what you expect. Both of them can’t die, but they just keep stabbing, slashing and generally trying to hurt each other.

The rest of the violence is what you expect, broken bones, blood, dismembered limbs, more blood, the occasional head coming off and more blood.

I think Levy has done a great job with the direction, the action is well done and fun to watch.

The Cast

As I said, there’s only one reason that Deadpool & Wolverine exists, Reynolds and Jackman on the screen. I have loved their off-screen ‘feuding’, I love how childish Reynolds is about everything and Jackman plays off against it.

You can tell they are really good friends, and this spills over to the movie. The on-screen chemistry is what you expect. Wrenage said that Reynolds is the funny one and Jackman is the straight one, but this still works really well.

Both of them give performances that make you laugh and, at times, make you cry. Sometimes, the seriousness took over a little too much, which spoilt it a little for me. I want to see jokes and blood, not feelings, I’m not a girl.

No spoilers, but the very last scene of Deadpool & Wolverine, after the main fight, was a little too sappy for me. It just took the edge off what was a fun movie.

I don’t know, maybe I’m a heartless monster?

Thankfully, the end credits had a great montage, which helped bring me back down again.

Deadpool-and-wolverine

Overall

Deadpool & Wolverine had me smiling all the way through. I did laugh out loud in places, but the rest of the time, I was simply snorting air through my nose at the quips and jokes.

I can see why this made over $100,000,000,000,000 at the box office. It was just want was needed.

There’s no message, no virtue signalling, it’s got two while male leads and it all just works.

It’s fun, a little too serious in place, but overall, just makes you laugh, chill out and gives you entertainment. I had been waiting to watch it and I’m glad I have and will be watching it again soon.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now on streaming and you should have a blast with it, I know I did.
