Trunks, or no trunks? This is apparently one of the big Superman-related questions of our age. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has been pulled into this debate as Superman Legacy approaches. Modeled on an old circus strongman outfit, Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh both had the trunks. Cavill went without.

While interacting with fans on Threads account, Gunn was asked outright about the trunks. He responded:

“You wouldn’t believe the amount of pleading and upset I get based around trunks or no trunks. To me, not the most important aspect of Superman or his story. But so many strong feelings!

This might be an extreme point of view. The costume has changed in many, many ways throughout the years. They are all (or mostly all) valid versions of Superman, with or without trunks, with or without yellow S on cape, with or without black around the S, with or without mullet, and on and on and on.”

Therefore he can neither confirm nor deny the existence of trunks at this stage. This is probably not entirely true, as with shooting starting early next year and the lead role already set, drawings will already be done and costume tests are almost certainly already underway.

David Corenswet will fill those trunks, or nonexistent trunks, in the role of Kal-El/Superman. He is deep into his training and has been photographed around Hollywood bulked up. Personal trainer Paolo Mascitti will have been stepping up his training to a more intense schedule as the filming date approaches.

The cast is rounded out by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor along with Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan and more.

Superman: Legacy is set to open in cinemas on July 11th 2025. Expect confirmation of trunks, or lack of trunks, to be confirmed in the new year when the inevitable first costume pics are released.

Why… yes, yes it is a slow news day! Other than the whole Kang thing, obvs.
