Sweeney Talks BARBARELLA Reboot

Sydney Sweeney has been attached to the planned reboot of Barbarella for a while. On the one hand, I can’t help but think a Barbarella reboot just won’t be that good. It’ll be aimed at the “modern audience” and will be nothing like as… titillating as the original.  Some people will no doubt be tuning in with lube and a box of tissues at the ready, nonetheless.

Barbarella

Barbarella is an odd movie. It is set in the 41st century, and follows Barbarella travelling around space and getting into all kinds of sexy misadventures. As a teenage boy, it was the hottest thing I’d ever seen. Now, as a full-grown (mostly) mature man, it was very mild.

Talk of a Barbarella reboot has been going around for many years. Actresses like Halle Berry, Rose McGowan, and Kate Beckinsale talked about playing the character, but none of them ever got off the ground. Directors like Robert Rodriguez, and even Nicholas Winding Refn, were attached to projects, but again, nothing ever got a green light. Last year, Sony announced that the project was moving forward, with Sydney Sweeney in the main role.

That’s Why She Did Madame Web

Apparently, Sweeney admitted that she agreed to Madame Web to build her relationship with Sony. This would lead to Barbarella being made finally. This would explain a lot, I mean, why else would anyone have appeared in Madame Web? Sweeney said in a recent interview:

“It is. I mean, Barbarella is just such a fun character to explore. She really just embraces her femininity and her sexuality, and I love that. She uses sex as a weapon and I think it’s such an interesting way into a sci-fi world. I’ve always wanted to do sci-fi. So we’ll see what happens.“

I’m confused, I thought we were in 2024, you’re not allowed to say stuff like this anymore, are you? I have no idea how a script like Barbarella would work in today’s climate. They could gender-swap him. No, wait, no!

Did she give consent?
Did she give consent?

Sweeney was also asked if Edgar Wright was going to direct the reboot. She dodged the question and only said that she and Wright had become acquaintances. Wright is working on a Running Man reboot at the moment, but I wonder what Barbarella would be like with him at the helm?
