Last night I finally caught the latest Bad Boys entry, and I have to say I loved every single minute of it. Why? Because it felt like a throwback to 1990s action movies. It was everything that was so wrong, but felt so very right, about 1990s action.
You know what 1990s action was like. Bombastic, over the top, flashy, and shiny. Shot like a cross between an MTV rap video and a fizzy drinks commercial. All smash-cuts and slo-mo and pumping soundtracks straight off the promotional tie-in CD.
And it got me thinking about 1990s action movies, and sparked a discussion among a few Outposters last night.
Does the triumvirate of Bayhem that is Bad Boys, The Rock, and Armageddon form the perfect group of 1990s action? Others challenged that it is impossible to talk about 1990s action without talking about Con Air.
Several of us quietly admitted that we had once spent more than a decade thinking Michael Bay directed that as well!
Talking about Cage, what about Face/Off? Another Outposter said John Woo beats Michael Bay hands down and his 90s output is superior. Yet his output didn’t benefit from Jerry Bruckheimer, Don Simpson, and a mountain of cocaine!
This felt like a great subject for a debate. Here is another big one, and potentially controversial? While the 1980s gets the nostalgia boost, was the 1990s actually better for action movies in general? So that’s our topic:
Was the 90s the greatest action movie decade, and what was the undisputed action movie champion of that decade?
So have at it, Outposters. There is only one way to settle this. FIGHT!
