THE GREAT DEBATE: Cult Movies

Gentlemen, ladies and all other fairy tale creatures, let us gather in the great hall of the Last Movie Outpost. It is time to debate with other Outposters and prove your point. This will be a clean fight, so put away those knuckle-dusters.

Debate

Going through some movies the other day, I found some interesting lists: Cannon Movies, The AFI’s Top 100, Fangoria’s Best Horror movies etc. One of the lists I clicked on was simply called Cult Movies.

On the list were a good few movies I hadn’t seen, so I added them to my watchlist. However, there were also movies that I wouldn’t consider cult. This sparked a debate in my head about what a cult movie is.

One of the movies I remember seeing on the list was The Goonies. Now, I wouldn’t say The Goonies is a cult movie, I think it’s more mainstream. When you mention it to pretty much anyone, they will say they have seen it.

To me, a cult movie is something a little more obscure, something that didn’t do well at the box office, but then gained a bigger following afterwards.

So, for the debate today, here is the question:

What is a cult movie to you?

And, as a caveat, what is the best cult movie? Which movie do you love that people haven’t heard of (if you consider that ‘cult’)?

For this debate, movies that spring to my mind are things like Freaks (1932) or The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Annoyingly, with most of the people I work with, The Last Starfighter is a ‘cult movie’, since none of them had seen it. I was so disappointed with them all!

So, let the debate being and let’s settle this, once and for all.
