The IMDB Top 250 Project – Gangster

My quest to watch all the movies in the IMDB Top 250 continues, albeit at a sluggish pace. To help gee me along, I am asking the good folks at LastMovieOutpost to vote on which movie I should watch next, which I will then review.

So far, we have covered period drama (Sunset Boulevard) and comedy (Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb). Next up is gangster!

Vanilla Ice
You called?

Here is a list of gangster movies that I really ought to have watched before now. I will correct that horrendous mistake, but please select which movie from the following list that you would like me to watch first and review for next week.

City of God (2002)

City of God

IMDB rating: 8.6

Brazilian crime drama chronicling the rise of organized crime in a Rio de Janeiro favela from the 1960s to the 1980s.

When I changed jobs in 2006, I asked for, and received, a DVD of City of God as a leaving present. It has sat on a shelf ever since, in cellophane. I still haven’t watched it.

The Departed (2006)

Jack Nicholso and Leonardo Di Caprio

IMDB rating: 8.5

Martin Scorsese’s star-studded gangster drama. An undercover cop and a police mole working for the Irish mob in Boston attempt to identify each other before their cover is blown.

I’ve never been a huge gangster movie fan, but that’s no excuse for not watching this one.

American History X (1998)

Edward Norton

IMDB rating: 8.5

A former neo-Nazi tries to save his younger brother, Danny, from the same white supremacist path that landed him in prison.

Edward Norton has quietly become one of my favourite actors. Recently I have watched The Painted Veil, Primal Fear (his first movie role), Fight Club (again), Birdman and A Complete Unknown. He is fantastic in all of them. But somehow I haven’t watched American History X.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

Once Upon a Time in America

IMDB rating: 8.3

Sergio Leone’s epic crime drama following New York Jewish-American gangsters across three time periods: 1918, 1930, and 1968.

Never seen this and I don’t know anything about it other than the synopsis I just wrote. I only just realised James Woods is in it. I love that guy! Again, I have owned this on DVD for many years but haven’t gotten around to watching it.
