Irwin Allen wasn’t just the master of disaster behind movies like The Poseidon Adventure. He was also the name over the door on Lost In Space, The Time Tunnel, and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
A legend of a producer who provided foundational television memories to an entire generation of Outposters.
Well, one of his shows is getting reborn, and the lead has been announced.
Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) will step aboard the new project from Paramount+ and Legendary Television, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
She will play ocean scientist Lee Crane, who – according to the blurb – finds herself pulled into a classified government program after a catastrophic Arctic expedition claims the life of her twin sister.
At the center of the program is the USS Seaview, a retro-futuristic submarine found entombed in the ice, marked with symbols from a history that shouldn’t exist.
It powers up when Lee steps inside.
In a pressure-cooker situation, with a newly formed crew and an uneasy alliance with government power brokers, Lee and the Seaview will spearhead daring undersea missions to contain mysterious forces leaking into our world.
At the time she uncovers a hidden truth about the oceans, an erased chapter of human history, and the once-thought mythical city of Atlantis.
Ridley seems quite sweet, and the state of the Star Wars sequels isn’t on her as a person, so hopefully she gets the chance to make a decent fist of this, as the outline sounds interesting enough.
The show, however, is written by Akiva Goldsman who seems to now be trapped in that revolving door of go-to writers who just keep turning up in projects that simply aren’t good enough… like Nu Trek.
Matt Shakman is also involved and will direct. All three will executive produce.
The Irwin Allen Estate are involved and give their blessing.
