THE GREAT DEBATE: Nothing Has Changed

Time for a mid-week Great Debate, gentlemen and ladies (are there any women here?). So gather in the great halls, prepare your argument, and ready yourself for another debate for the ages.

Another great debate asked which movies predicted the future. Obviously, Idiocracy was the correct answer. The world is slowly getting dumber, and we are along with it. In fact, some of us have a good head start.

In line with that debate, I got to thinking about which movies didn’t predict the future, but just have timeless stories.

I watched A Clockwork Orange the other day, as a little treat to myself. It is a work of genius, not just because of Kubrick, but because of the story by Anthony Burgess. You know the story: Alex and his Droogs, commit ultra-violence, and he finds himself in jail.

He’s subjected to Ludovico technique of therapy, but then finds himself in more trouble, not only with his friends, but at the behest of the government and people who want to exploit him.

While watching it, I couldn’t help but think how timeless the story will be. In a hundred years, you could still watch A Clockwork Orange; it will still have the same effect. There will always be those who want to be violent, and powerful people who want to exploit others.

That got me thinking about other movies/stoies that are timeless: To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, or The Handmaid’s Tale spring to mind. For this Great Debate.

Which movies/TV shows will still be seen as relevant in 100 years’ time?

Will The Godfather still be relevant, as there will always be organised crime? Does Jurassic Park warn us about doing something like that? Will there always be a need for a Batman?

Join the great debate and tell us what movies will still be relevant in the future.
