The original The Strangers movie came out in 2008. Based on a real-life experience, it is a fairly standard plot. A young couple staying at an isolated vacation home is terrorized by three unknown assailants.
For reference, see pretty much every horror movie made in the past 120 years. I have seen the original, but I couldn’t tell you a thing about it now. The (original) Strangers was written and directed by Bryan Bertino, but he has nothing to do with The Strangers: Chapter 1.
Chapter 1 is from Renny Harlin. Harlin you say? OK, this has piqued my interest. Harlin has made some fun movies in the past, Die Hard 2, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger, Cutthroat Island, Deep Blue Sea. OK, none of them are Shakespeare, but you generally have fun with them.
It turns out, Harlin has shot 3 The Strangers movies, back to back. He explains:
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is close to the original movie in its set-up of a young couple in an isolated environment in a house and a home invasion happening for random reasons. Then Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 explore what happens to the victims of this kind of violence and who the perpetrators are of this kind of violence. Where are they coming from and why?
This is a 3 movie prequel to a fairly forgettable movie from 2008. I might give it a try, because it’s Harlin, but I can’t say I’m holding out much hope. It sounds like this kind of thing could be done over one movie. Funny Games, for example.

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is getting a theatrical release on 17th May.
