Blossom

BLOSSOM Not Returning

The 80s may be saved thanks to the return of KITT, but the 90s have no such luck. Inexplicably popular 1990s teen sitcom Blossom won’t be getting a revival. No more “Very Special Episodes” for you!

Starring The Big Bang Theory alum Mayim Bialik, Blossom aired for five seasons on NBC. Debuting as a pilot preview on July 5, 1990, it premiered as a mid-season replacement on January 3, 1991, and aired until May 22, 1995.

It followed a teenage girl navigating life while living with her single father (Ted Wass) and two older brothers (Joey Lawrence, Michael Stoyanov). Blossom would frequently have fantasy sequences wherein she would receive advice from celebrities such as Mr. T, Phylicia Rashad, David Spade, ALF, Will Smith, and God.

Yeah. It was every bit as weird as it sounds. Her best friend was called “Six”.

Blossom

Blossom was known for frequently having a “Very Special Episode” where it would deal with some big issue felt to befall teenagers, such as first periods, condoms, and sexual assault by a date.

Now, Mayim Bialik has confirmed that the long-gestating reboot is no longer moving forward at Disney. In a blog post, she said that it was “not for lack of trying” and cited a combination of industry-wide mergers and a new executive regime that weren’t fans.

Original show creator Don Reo had completed a script for the pilot of a single-camera reboot with the cast all in, but to no avail. Attempts to obtain the series rights for themselves from Disney were also declined.
