Found footage movies have gone from the days of VHS to the TikTok generation, filming themselves 24/7. Strawstalker is the latter, and here is a trailer.
At first, having the camera up that girl’s nose seemed annoying, but as the trailer went on, it looked more interesting. I just hope they get the filming correct; I think I’ve seen one ‘found footage’ movie where the camerawork was realistic.
Strawstalker stars Branika Scott, George Henry Horton, Dallas Steinback, Vincent Ranola, Emily Rafala, and Gary Kasper. Horton is the writer and director. The story:
When a fame hungry couple moves to an ideal LA home, their new dream life spirals into nightmare as an ancient scarecrow begins stalking them – feeding on their lies, testing truth, and turning their fandom into witnesses of its judgment.
The press release said the movie was ‘tongue in cheek’, but I wasn’t getting that vibe from the trailer. More from the release.
Strawstalker is a campy new addition to the found footage canon that follows a fame-hungry couple who move into an ideal LA home, only to have their new dream life spiral into a nightmare at the straw hands of a supernatural scarecrow.
Horton produced Strawstalker with his longtime creative partner Ryan Scaringe (Send a Scare, The Djinn).
With the film and its titular monster unleashed on the world, Horton shared:
“I’ve always felt that scarecrows don’t get enough love. They’re inherently creepy, but also a little theatrical, which felt perfect for something that could be both unsettling and fun. We wanted to embrace that balance. It’s a film that plays with fear, but also with the absurdity of it all. There’s a campfire quality to it. Strawstalker knows what it is, and it invites the audience in on the campy ride.”
Strawstalker is on VoD right now. I’ve asked for a screener and will report back.
