Avatar just did it again. It came, it made a metric ton of cash as it tore up the box office, became the third highest-grossing movie of all time… and then it completely disappeared and everyone seems to have forgotten it ever happened. Nobody is talking about it. Nobody is saying “Oh man, I just have to rewatch Avatar: The Way Of Water right away!” It isn’t sitting in anyone’s favorite list on their streaming services as the algo gasps at its sheer re-watchability of it all.
Just how does Avatar do it? Maybe we will never know. What we do know is that the world of Pandora is very far from done with us. At Sony’s State of Play event yesterday, a new story trailer was shown for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a game that launches on December 7th based on James Cameron’s seemingly magical sci-fi franchise.
The game will contain both first-person and third-person perspectives and require players to partake in flying, horseriding, parkour, mech combat, and boss fights. Weaponry will be anything from the RDA arsenal to bows, arrows and spears.
It is set after the events of the first Avatar movie and features a Na’vi orphan raised and trained as a soldier by the RDA. The character is put into suspended animation and wakes up fifteen years later in an abandoned facility. As the character, the player must embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen continent of Pandora, discovering their origins and organizing the local Na’vi tribes to fight back against the RDA as they attempt to exploit the natural resources of the Western Frontier.
The game is a collaboration between Disney and James Cameron’s production company. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be available on December 7th on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Amazon Luna.
