It used to be a bad sign when movies were shot and then remained on the shelf for a while. Now, in the age of streaming, it is simply scheduling. It means that you can find some mid-budget gems cropping up on streaming that you really didn’t see coming. Will Mayday be one of them? Time will tell.
Apple TV has premiered the official trailer for the buddy comedy action thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. Reynolds is hotshot U.S. pilot Lieutenant Troy ‘Assassin’ Kelly, who is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War. When things go wrong, he is stranded behind enemy lines.
He is discovered by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, and an unlikely alliance between the two leads to a bond neither saw coming, and a race for their lives.
Marcin Doroncinski, Maria Baklava, Lovell Adams-Gray, Clark Johnson, Alex Mallari Jr., Louis Cancelmi, Alex Ozerov, and David Morse co-star in the film, which comes from Game Night and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves writer/directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. So they have a decent track record of hitting just the right spot.
Beemed directly into my house so I can drink beer on the couch while watching it? Yes. I think I will!
Mayday was shot in Montreal in early 2024. It arrives on Apple TV on September 4th.
