Isn’t it odd that in horror movies, the antagonist just won’t die? Well, life is imitating art, and the Scream franchise will not give up the ghost-face.
Scream 7 was one of the bigger box office draws of the year, with the 30-year-old franchise taking $97 million in the opening weekend. It went on to make just over $208 million, against its $45 million budget.
Variety said it was the “series ‘ highest-grossing instalment”. However, figures adjusted for inflation show the original Scream is still the best box office numbers.
With Scream 7 doing so well, it wasn’t long before Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures announced an eighth movie in the franchise.
Reported on Variety, Neve Campbell has confirmed she will reprise her role as Sidney, the “ultimate final girl”. She confirmed it in a series of interviews about her Netflix series Black Doves.
Campbell has now been in six out of the seven other movies. She was not in Scream 6 because of a contract dispute. For Scream 7, she was reportedly paid $7 million.
As someone on Twitter said:
Sidney Prescott has survived more horror sequels than most of us have Mondays!
The series will keep going and going until it turns out that Sidney herself is Ghostface, and it represents male oppression. Actually, I shouldn’t give them ideas.
