The Last Movie Outpost was way ahead of the curve. We told you about a Backrooms movie back in September last year. We said that A24 was producing, and it seems that other (lesser) news outlets are reporting that Backrooms has been greenlit.
The original Backrooms, by Kane Pixels on YouTube, went viral. The first of the videos has 66 million views on Kane’s official channel. That’s not bad as the video doesn’t have a script and just ‘someone walking around an empty building’.
There is nothing but yellow rooms, flickering fluorescent lights, and the occasional humming noises. It’s never been explained what the Backrooms are, but fans think it’s an alternate reality, adjacent to our own universe.
The Backrooms movie has a cast, including Cristin Milioti, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Renate Reinsve. This is interesting, as the original videos didn’t really ‘star’ anyone.
The plot of the Backrooms movie is kept under wraps, but Kane is writing and directing. With A24 producing, let’s hope they leave him to it and don’t interfere too much with his style. Reports so far say that A24 want to keep the atmosphere of the original, without relying on jump scares. I hope this is true, I’ve enjoyed most of Kane’s original work, and some of it is genuine ‘edge of your seat’ stuff.
Alongside A24, Backrooms is being produced by 21 Atomic Monster, 21 Laps Entertainment, and Chernin Entertainment. Producers include Shevy Levy and James Wan.
Kane will be the youngest director to work for A24, as he’s only 19 years old. He originally created Backrooms when he was 16. His work has been noted for its “technical precision, eerie restraint and creative use of lo-fi aesthetics”.
There is no news on a release date, but it’s one to keep an eye out for.
