There was a time when Alexandre Aja could do no wrong when it came to water-dwelling beasties that liked to snack on people. First up was the splatter masterpiece that is Piranha 3D. Then there was the windy alligator surprise of Crawl. Both movies really understood the assignment. So news of a Crawl sequel is welcome.
Now, Paramount Pictures has set a July 16th 2027 release date for Crawl 2, making it arrive in movie theaters one week after Man Of Tomorrow. That could be a weird double bill!
The original starred Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and father caught in a Category 5 hurricane in the father’s Florida home. They become trapped in a crawl space with some hungry alligators. As the flood waters rise, the rest of the house and the surrounding area also becomes a hunting ground.
Crawl was a critical and commercial success, grabbing $91 million worldwide from a budget of just $14 million.
The sequel began filming in Hungary this past summer, and this time the action moves to New York where alligators arise in the streets after a hurricane hits the city. I wonder if they came from the sewers?
Aja, Jason Harry Pagan, Andrew Deutschman, and Gregory Levasseur all worked on the script, while Craig Flores and Sam Raimi join Aja as producers.
