Japanese video game Lollipop Chainsaw is described as a cult hit. It follows Juliet Starling. She is a High School cheerleader who also happens to be born into a legendary family of zombie hunters.
When a zombie outbreak engulfs her school, Juliet must fight her way through the undead to save her friends and protect her family, including her boyfriend Nick, using whatever comes to hand.
Hmmm… Japanese. High school cheerleaders. Violence. Something about this just seems off. Like if it was left unsupervised it would be out sniffing bicycle saddles. I have an image in my head of the fans of it already.
Well, whatever my confirmation biases, those fans are in for some kind of treat, as Lollipop Chainsaw is to be turned into a live-action feature film that also serves as a prequel.
A report in Deadline confirms that the announcement was made at the Tokyo Game Show and the movie will be set before the events of the original game.
It will be an R-rated action comedy. The project was also pitched as a potential franchise and a “new model for building globally recognised entertainment franchises from Asia”. Tentacle porn is coming.
Former ZDF Studios drama boss Robert Franke released a statement:
“We are making a film that feels unmistakably true to the spirit of Lollipop Chainsaw while standing completely on its own. Longtime fans will recognize the attitude, irreverence, and glorious excess they love, while newcomers can simply enjoy an unforgettable action-horror comedy. Our ambition is to create a film that entertains audiences everywhere, whether they’ve played the game or not.”
A new video game and animated series is also planned. The original game was released in 1012.
