Famous bringer of only his A-game and man who doesn’t even understand the concept of ”phoning it in” Tom Cruise is arguably the last bona fide movie star working today.
Sure, there are other actors, but proper, old fashioned matinee idols? The field feels thin, and the landscape in Hollywood has shifted.
He is famous for his focus and intensity, and he has admitted in a major interview that he knows he is intense, and he embraces it.
He only has one request for his co-stars in whatever project he is working on: that they’re as committed as he is.
Nominated for an Oscar four times, and recipient last year of an honorary Academy Award for a lifetime in film, he opened up about his famous work ethic in the interview.
He is preparing for the opening of Digger, a black comedy directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, next month, so GQ sat down with the the 64-year-old who admitted:
“I work hard, and people that work with me, they know. I expect a lot and I’m up-front about it. It’s like: ‘The rumours are true. And do you want this?'”
He admitted that he’s been told of his intensity from a very young age, and he laughed:
‘I don’t know what to say. I am intense. I’ve got a very good sense of humour about it, but it was like, when I’m interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it. And you want to blast through the confusion and kind of build up that ability.”
“I’m always studying something. I’m always learning something, always. Movies don’t just start when you’re shooting it and on a movie set.”
Digger is released on October 2nd.
