It could be even worse than they imagined. Tom Cruise’s Experimental effort Digger has pulled in… wait for it… just $8 million for its opening weekend. It is currently in fifth place at the box office.
This was on a production budget as high as $160 million even with UK tax credits. This leaves Warner Bros. staring down th barrel of a $150 million loss even when future PVOD sales and everything else are baked in. Ouch!

This is the lowest opening for Cruise project since Lions for Lambs. There is a swing and a miss, but this one will really hurt.
The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity has swept it completely away, with $32.6 million.
Both films have had bad reviews, but Verity seems to be rising above it, while Digger is trapped in a box office gravity well. Cruise gets a pass, seeing as he basically saved cinema post-COVID, but you imagine Top Gun 3 is now being accelerated.
Elsewhere, Resident Evil took second lace with $12 million to take the total to $124.3 million.
Heart of the Beast took third, and is showing some legs, with $11 million in its second week.
Further back is Avengers Endgame: Encore in seventh, with $4.2 million. The weird decision to only release the Infinity Vision version for one week has probably spiked the chances of overtaking Avatar as number one movie of all time.
