We were warned. It was inevitable. Eventually, the rhythm is gonna get you. Outposters of a certain age will remember when a young Gloria Estefan burst onto the scene as the lead singer of Miami Sound Machine. Along with Miami Vice and Scarface, it was the third pillar in re-launching the City of Miami back into the global public consciousness years before Bad Boys and David Beckham.

The story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, two Cuban immigrants who launched themselves to international musical stardom, was adapted into a Broadway jukebox musical in 2015. On Your Feet would go on to open in London’s West End and then go on international tours.

Now, Lissette Feliciano (Women Is Losers) will write and direct the movie adaption of the show for Sony Pictures according to a report in Deadline.

Both Estefan’s will produce alongside John and Jordan Davis with John Fox is executive producing.

The show is set during Gloria’s early days in Miami and covers her breakthrough as the lead singer of the band, and also her near-fatal accident and rehabilitation, and her eventual return to performing. It is all set against the backdrop of the immigrant community in Miami, among the bonds of family. Alexander Dinelaris penned the book.

The stage show features a wide array of Estefan’s catalog, including Get On Your Feet, Reach, and Coming Out of the Dark.

Dios mío! Excitación!
