The two-part sequel to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ is now deep into post-production, and it has been confirmed that the movies will make a big change from the original.
Rather than Aramaic and Latin, these sequels will be in English.
Gibson was at Fan Expo Boston and, in response to a question from Collider, he explained why they made this switch, and it is down to the audience and the source material:
“They’re both in English because the subject matter and just the theological download you have to go through is so complex that I don’t think people would like to have to read it in subtitles in a foreign language.
You want to be able to digest it straight away.
So I tailored the material to fit the audience, and I think having it in the vernacular would be better for it. It [the resurrection] is a very difficult thing to understand. So you can’t just tell the linear story that way.”
The screenplay was more than a decade in the making. Gibson’s Braveheart writer Randall Wallace worked alongside his brother and Gibson to get it right.
Part One is set for release on May 6th 2027, and Part Two is on May 25th 2028.
