The CEO of HBO, Casey Bloys, has spoken with Deadline about their DC projects and has confirmed that they are being particularly choosy over what gets a green light, hence why many shows don’t make it out of early development.
Despite online noise, Lanterns is proving a big hit for HBO with the numbers rising week on week as positive word of mouth spreads in normie world.
Waller, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold have all failed to make it out of early development, and Bloys has spoken about why:
“It’s the same thing with Game of Thrones. People read about development and they assume that those are greenlit shows, and they’re development. And everybody knows that development is just that – you’re trying things, you take big swings, not everything comes through.
I would say our track record in DC, from Watchmen to Peacemaker to Penguin and now Lanterns, is pretty good. We’re very selective. We’re careful about what we do, nothing has changed. You’ll read about development, but focus on what we’re greenlighting.”
Speaking about a potentially controversial DC project that is underway, he said:
“Obviously you’ve got Gorilla Grodd, which I’m very happy about, doing something different, and I think it’s a really fun idea. They just started shooting.”
Man Of Tomorrow is expected to tie together a lot of the threads being laid out in several projects, but DC observers still seem largely unsure of where The People vs. Gorilla Grodd will fit.
