It’s been a while since JJ Abrams has made a movie. Remember his last one, The Rise of Palpatine? I remember it being good, but then I had a violent kick to the head by a donkey.
That was back in 2019; since then, he’s been producing and generally keeping his head down. He was once the talk of Tinseltown; then he worked for Disney, and that put a stop to that.
Abrams does have a new movie coming out, The Great Beyond. At the time of writing, the plot details are unknown, but it is boasting an impressive cast: Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Samuel L. Jackson, Merritt Wever, Sophie Okonedo, and Emma Mackey. I find Mackey to be rather attractive, and she’s British, which means there’s a chance!
It’s been a while since Abrams has tackled an original IP, and this is what The Great Beyond seems to be. There was a teaser recently shown at CinemaCon, but it didn’t give much away.
Reports say it seemed to be about Powell and Ortega, as two ordinary people trapped in a fantasy world/planet. Mackey seems to be a warrior who needs help; that’s about it. Filming began in Scotland in June last year, but again, that is all that’s known.
Listed on the IMDb, some of the actors are listed as D&D Kid, which is interesting.
Originally, Abrams’ movie was set for release in Nov 2027, but it’s now been brought forward to 1st Oct 2027 by Warner Bros. We’ll share the teaser when it’s online.
