Leo & Lawrence In For Scorsese

There has been a lot of speculation about what Martin Scorsese’s next project would be. For a while, it looked like Dwayne Johnson would be continuing his career journey from The Wrecking Machine to a Hawaiian-set crime thriller under the director.

Now it looks like that might be the second cab off the rank, as Scorsese is lining up What Happens At Night. Leonardo DiCaprio will star alongside Jennifer Lawrence.

The project is set up at Studiocanal, with Apple Original Films bidding hard to co-finance and produce. Both Scorsese and DiCaprio have first-look deals at Apple and collaborated with them on Killers Of The Flower Moon. Lawrence last worked with DiCaprio for Don’t Look Up.

DiCaprio-Scorsese

Filming could start as early as January. Scorsese was only set to What Happens At Night. Once Patrick Marber turned in the script, based on the Peter Cameron novel, he clearly decided to put more skin in the game.

Scorsese’s new project is described as “dream-like”. It follows a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters. These include a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange, frozen world.

As the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together.

DiCaprio can next be seen in One Battle After Another, which is being painted as a serious awards contender this year.
