San Diego Comic Con content is flowing thick and fast, and the latest was something that was not necessarily on many people’s radar. Apple, Skydance and Mattel Studios have released the first trailer for Matchbox, the live-action film adaptation of Mattel’s toy car line. This is not Hot Wheels, which was a JJ Abrams project that seems to have… ahem… stalled.
Matchbox stars John Cena, Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson and Teyonah Parris, who all appeared at a Comic Con panel for the film, where the trailer was first screened.
“Inspired” by the Mattel toys, the Skydance co-production follows a group of friends since childhood who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (Cena), their long-absent former friend, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world.
Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Danai Gurira, and Golshifteh Faranhani co-star in the film. Extraction helmer Sam Hargrave directs. The script was written by David Coggeshall. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Robbie Brenner, Jules Daly, and Ynon Kreiz produce.
Matchbox: The Movie arrives on Apple TV on October 9th.
