A new Star Trek movie has been in some form of development since, well, right now it seems like forever. After all the false dawns, cancellations, announcements that never went anywhere, and various other attempts to relaunch the franchise for the big screen, some new names entered the frame.
Last November, filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were announced as the writers, producers, and directors of the next Star Trek film.
This was set by Paramount following the acquisition by Skydance, who were keen to push forward with new projects to leverage their premier IP, of which Star Trek was one.
They were the duo behind 2018’s acclaimed comedy Game Night, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – which was way better than anyone expected – and they wrote the script for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
At the time, they confirmed a completely new take set in the Star Trek universe, one that was not connected to any previous movie or related to any of the recent television shows. Now, an update has arrived following their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con:
Daley: “In progress, and we’re very excited about it. I think people will be surprised. I really can’t say anything other than that.”
Goldstein: “I think we’ve said in the past, it won’t be the characters that you’ve seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So there will be a new take on that. And I think it’ll probably be a little further into the future than we’ve been before. What draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin.”
The Next Generation era was set in the 24th century, with Discovery and Starfleet Academy set in the 32nd century. So are we talking beyond even that? How far into the future do you go before it becomes unrecognisable as Trek?
Strange New Worlds ends next year, with Starfleet Academy already cancelled after the second season. Star Trek Beyond was the last time we saw Trek on the big screen, a decade ago.
