Matthew Vaughn is back with a very impressive cast for his new movie Argylle. The cast includes Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Catherine O’Hara (Kevin’s Mum), and Dua Lipa – wowsers!
In what looks like a typical bombastic Vaugh romp, the Argylle premise is as follows:
Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a spy, shows up to save her from being kidnapped or killed, Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing, and no one, is what it seems.
Copy And Paste?
Vaughn has a very impressive filmography that includes Layer Cake, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Kick-Ass but watching this, it seems to me to be just another copy-and-paste from things we’ve seen before.
Also, everything is clearly shot in front of the green screen and the CGI cat looks Marvel-level awful and extremely off-putting. I just hope that Argylle is more Kingsman than The King’s Man, but from what I’ve seen in this trailer, I am less than impressed.
Argylle hits theaters on 2nd February 2024 and will also be released on (the very impressive) Apple TV+ at a later date. Oh and Henry, Hank Evans called, he wants his haircut back.
