With production now fully underway on The Batman Part II, there have been some big noises coming from the set. Not too long ago, Sebastian Stan made some comments that made Outposters scoff. He said he’s getting the impression he’s working on the set of a masterpiece, and made references to The Godfather Part Two.
Bold claims. Now the lead, Batman / Bruce Wayne actor Robert Pattinson, has also made similar claims. He had previously told an interviewer in Venice that the approach this movie is taking is “radical”.
Now, out promoting his latest project Primetime, he has spoken with Collider and echoed those thoughts, while giving a few more:
“It’s so ambitious. I mean, I sort of said the other day on something that the first one was a different take on a Batman movie, and this one is another… It’s a real left turn from the first one, but somehow it keeps elements of the kind of feel of it. But it just feels really ambitious, and I’m excited to see how it turns out.”
Batman Part II took a while to get going, as the script was being polished and then polished again. Pattinson also gave some insight as to why:
“When you see it, the script is incredibly dense, and it’s like he’s just one of those directors who it’s really obvious that he has the entire thing in his head already, and so it’s unusual to be working with someone when you keep forgetting with little elements.
There’s so much in it that it’s almost impossible to encompass the whole thing, but when you keep finding out, you’re like, ‘Oh, no, you know exactly what you want to do with this.’ There’s just something so cool about it.”
Given that Pattinson is a serious actor with an increasingly impressive body of diverse work building, does this mean we could be getting something special? If The Batman sequel does decent money and gets critical praise, does this heap even more pressure on James Gunn to find a way to fold this Elseworlds project into the DCU?
