It has been a long time coming, and it is his first non-Pixar animated project since The Iron Giant.
Ray Gunn is future neo-noir. Set in Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate 1930s-style future, Private eye Raymond Gunn is the last human private detective. He is drawn into a case involving aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova. The project is described as a “blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the 40s…it’s Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers” by Bird himself.
Oscar winner Sam Rockwell stars as Raymond Gunn alongside Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson as Venus Nova and Tom Waits as Eyera.
Bird co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Robbins. John Lasseter, Lisa Beroud, David Ellison, and Dana Goldberg produce alongside Bird.
