Remember back when there were doubts that One Battle After Another was the right move? The studio was very nervous. Paul Thomas Anderson movies do not make huge profits, and they were handing over a bigger budget than he had ever worked with before.
In the end, the movie just about turned a profit, but was a critical and awards darling. Luvvies clapped, circles were jerked. Everybody was happy.
The Oscar for Best Picture followed, and everyone might have expected the acclaimed filmmaker to take an extended break. It appears that is not happening. Anderson is already lining up his next movie.
Longtime collaborator Jonny Greenwood, who has composed the scores of multiple Anderson films, spoke with Screen Daily and confirms:
“Paul is getting close to pressing the button on the next film”.
He said that, as a composer, he’s already learning a new musical instrument because it will somehow be central to the film.
This would potentially add fuel to the fire of speculation that the project is a 1940-set jazz film focused around the Hotel Dunbar in South Central Los Angeles. Denzel Washington and Tiffany Haddish have been linked to that particular project.
Greenwood said that Anderson had considered a range of projects, but was now gaining momentum again around his chosen project.
