Popcorn Buckets: More Money Than They Are Worth?

There’s been a growing trend in the past couple of years to sell ‘cool’ popcorn buckets at the cinema. I find this amusing for several reasons.

Shut Up And Take My Money!

These buckets cost a lot. I haven’t seen them in my local Cineworld, but on some second-hand sites, I’ve seen Thanos’ glove popcorn bucket for around £70, a Mando helmet for about £40, and this one, from Insidious, for £30.

Pretty sure that’s Darth Maul, if you ordered him from Temu.

A quick search shows that buying them new is about £30 – £60 each in the UK, where I am. I really don’t understand how cinemas do it?

The price of a ticket to the cinema is pretty high already. Last time I went, it was about £12 for the ticket alone. I treated myself to a hot dog and drink; that was another £12.

If I did fancy a Thanos gauntlet popcorn bucket, that would have been another £60. So, going to see a single movie would cost about £84 with some merch. It’s only me and the wife, but our weekly grocery bill is only about £60.

Fine, you’re not going to buy one of these buckets every time you go to the cinema, but still, £60?

But They Are Rare

Remember how you had Star Wars toys as a kid, and you stupidly opened them and played with them? If only you had kept them in their packets, stored them nicely away; you’d be sitting on a fortune now.

When The Phantom Menace came out, everyone was out buying the tops and storing them nicely away. Sadly though, everyone else was doing the same. I honestly don’t see a Jar Jar toy, still in its wrapper, being worth a few hundred quid.

These new popcorn buckets are a dime a dozen. I imagine some people buy them, sticking them in their attics and hoping they will be worth something someday. I just don’t see it, as it seems there are so many out there.

A Bit Rude

Then we come on to the design of some of these popcorn buckets. Some of them really didn’t think the design process through, for example.

Yes, that’s supposed to be Supergirl in her brown coat, but umm, well, you don’t need me to tell you what it looks like. Dune is another great example; again, who thought this was a good idea?

I want to say ‘get your mind out of the gutter’, but it’s impossible.

However

There is a ‘however’ to all this. I’ve just sat here and moaned about the popcorn buckets and how much they are, but then I saw this Godzilla Minus Zero popcorn bucket.

OK, that is really cool. It’s 19 inches tall, looks really awesome, and I have no idea where the popcorn comes out; I hope from the top, and not the other end.

It would look impressive on any coffee table or in an office. I know where I would keep it in my office, and full of popcorn or other treats as well.

Funnily enough, looking up the details, I’ve seen someone bugger on eBay selling this item as a ‘pre-order’ for £230. As of now, the expected price should be about £60.

Do you have a popcorn bucket, or are you as poor as me?
