Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has blown straight through any predictions and pulled in more than $108 million globally on its opening weekend.
This is a split of about $60 million domestic nd the rest overseas, and these numbers are still creeping up.
This makes Resident Evil Cregger’s biggest debut so far and has only Backrooms ahead of it as biggest opening weekend for a horror.
Interestingly, that opening weekend is bigger than the worldwide final gross of the original Resident Evil movie.
In second place, driven by theatres full of cycling harridans, comes Practical Magic 2 with $12.2 million domestic. That’s a long way back in its second weekend.
In third and fourth place are the cinematic juggernauts of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey with $6.5 million and $4.9 million.
The top five is rounded out by Coyote vs. Acme with $4.5 million, vindicating Ketchup’s decision to buy it cheap off Warner Bros.
