Seinfeld’s UNFROSTED: THE POP-TART STORY

Jerry Seinfeld has directed, and is starring in, Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. This is a new Netflix comedy about the birth of the Pop-Tarts, the seemingly ever-present brand of toaster pastries produced by Kellogg’s since 1964. There is a trailer online.

It looks pretty good, and then you see Melissa McCarthy and Amy Schumer. At least it says “And Amy Schumer”, which should mean she’s not in it much. The story is straightforward:

Michigan 1963, business rivals Kellogg’s and Post compete to create a cake that could change breakfast forever.

The full synopsis from Netflix says:

“Battle Creek, Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A wildly imaginative tale of ambition, betrayal, and menacing milkmen – sweetened with artificial ingredients – UNFROSTED stars Jerry Seinfeld in his directorial film debut. It features a supporting cast of comedy greats including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Sarah Cooper, Bill Burr, and many more.”

It does look interesting. Sometimes these origin stories about real-life products can be fun, see Tetris for example. Seinfeld has written and directed this movie. I like the style of it, from what we can see in the trailer.

The Cast

There is a huge cast in Unfrosted. Alongside Seinfeld is (takes a deep breath) Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Daniel Levy, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, Adrian Martinez, Sarah Cooper, and Fred Armisen.

Seinfeld told Netflix that the movie originally came from a joke about making a movie about Pop-Tarts. During the pandemic, he sat down with co-writer Spike Feresten and actually wrote it. He recalls the first time he ever had Pop-Tarts.

“My first memory of Pop-Tarts is, once I tasted it, I assumed they would not continue to make other types of food. It would no longer be necessary to eat anything else.”

Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story will be on Netflix on 3rd May. Are you going to give it a try?
