When I saw the trailer for Zack Snyder’s The Last Photograph, I thought it was a very well-assembled trailer. The news out of TIFF is that a good trailer might be the only positive news about the film. It is being absolutely destroyed by TIFF attendees.
Snyder’s latest had its world premiere yesterday at the festival, and it is being called by some one of the worst movies to ever appear at TIFF.
Snyder and his team had been waiting for a distributor to come in, but nobody wanted to touch it, so they went for a festival in an effort to drum up some buzz. It now appears to have backfired spectacularly.
The Last Photograph was written by Kurt Johnstad (300), and tells the story of an ex-DEA operative who ventures into the South American mountains to rescue his kidnapped niece and nephew. He’s joined by a washed-up war photographer, and as the two head deeper into the wilderness, the mission forces him to confront his past.
Snyder financed the film from independent sources and shot it in Colombia with a budget of $10 million. The feedback online from the premiere is absolutely savage.
Reports out of TIFF say that distributors are swerving the project due to “quality concerns” and the extreme violence in the movie.
Where The Last Photograph goes next, and how it gets a release, remains to be seen.
