Spider-Man: Brand New Day looked like it had the villain of the piece nailed, according to previous rumors. It was said to be Martin Li, a man with a split personality between a philanthropist and Mister Negative, a ruthless crime lord who leads the Inner Demons gang and battles for control of New York’s Chinatown.
Now, another rumor has surfaced, backed up with evidence, that the scooper who reported on the above may have been wrong.
Disney held its Disney Consumer Products presentation in Las Vegas this week, and news leaked out of the event that included Conan O’Brien being cast in Toy Story 5. This other leak came via Instagram from somebody inside the event. The post that has since been deleted.
Early artwork was reportedly shown that revealed Scorpion, Boomerang, and Tombstone as the villains. No news on who will be the primary villain, and who may only have a cameo.
Scorpion was Mac Gargan a private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to learn how Peter Parker took pictures of Spider-Man. Jameson encouraged Gargan to undergo a barely tested procedure in order to create an adversary for Spider-Man.
Driven insane by his mutation, Gargan instead turned to a life of crime as the Scorpion, and went on to menace both Spider-Man and Jameson, who he held responsible for his transformation. Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) played the pre-Scorpion version of Mac Gargan in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Boomerang is a disgraced baseball pitcher, and part of the Secret Empire, an international criminal organization that saw the potential of his skills.
Tombstone is Alonzo Thompson “Lonnie” Lincoln, and is depicted as a hulking albino with filed teeth, Tombstone is a notorious crime boss in New York City who is primarily an enemy of Spider-Man and Daredevil.
We were promised a street-level Spider-Man story, and this chimes with that. Maybe Mr Negative also factors into this story?
Shooting begins this August.
