I’m old school; I still work with 8mm movies, the occasional 16mm, and have dealt with 35mm in the past. It was used when they used to make films. Today, they make movies. Star Wars is returning to the big screen in 2027, in its original format, 70mm.
According to Variety, Star Wars – A New Hope will be “getting the converted IMAX 70mm treatment”. So, I guess they aren’t showing it in 70mm, as most cinemas don’t have the projectors anymore. I’m guessing it will be a remaster from the originals.
I will say I’m still dubious about whether it will be the original theatrical cut or not. I haven’t seen it, but the Disney+ version has more in it than the 1997 Special Edition. There’s something about Greedo saying something before shooting Han.
I saw the Star Wars Special Edition release in 1997, and the whole ‘Greedo shooting Han thing’ is bloody stupid. If the re-release in 2027 is the original theatrical cut, but with a picture upgrade, great. If it’s one of the special editions, bad. It’s Disney we’re talking about here. I don’t trust them.
When Star Wars hits IMAX theatres, the new Starfighter movie will be doing the same. It will be a double feature, like Barbenheimer. I guess this one will be called Star Fighter. Oh, wait.
Apparently, advertising for Starfighter will be starting in earnest in November, so we might see a trailer soon.
Weirdly, Star Wars will be getting the re-release on 19th Feb 2027, with Starfighter being released in May 2027. I’m no marketing expert, but I would have thought that releasing the two movies at the same time was a no-brainer. Oh, wait, it’s Disney.
