There is always a phone. Always. No matter how much you try and lock things down, the trailers always get out there onto the internet. So it is with Star Wars: Starfighter. There was a presentation at D23, and an exclusive trailer was shown to the crowd as a D23-only release.
Within minutes, the trailer was spreading online. You can still find it out there, even if Disney is having copies taken down as fast as they appear online. Fan sites from places like the Philippines, in particular, seem to laugh in the face of cease-and-desist orders from Disney legal teams.
So you can find it out there, if you know where to look.
Dare we say it, but the footage actually looked good. Nice try, Lucasfilm! You have fooled us once too often, recently!
Director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling took to the stage to introduce the footage. It was confirmed that this is set in a completely new period for Star Wars – five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Variety has written a breakdown of the footage shown. Gosling’s pilot character Kade Auberon finds a young man looking over a decommissioned starfighter. Gosling’s character explains that it was the fastest ever built, but it never really entered service.
The footage shows Gosling flying the starfighter through various landscapes, including an ocean that shooting massive waterspouts. Footage also showed droids shooting at the ship, and a glimpse at a robot co-pilot.
Here is a camera-rip of the presentation itself, but it doesn’t include the trailer footage as we spent all our legal budget on lottery tickets.
Star Wars: Starfighter co-stars Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Eva Mendes.
It is lensed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (Top Gun: Maverick, Oblivion) which may explain why the footage looked so damn good. Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in cinemas on May 28th 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of Star Wars.
