The early 1990’s, a Super Nintendo, and an entire university dorm block locked in an ongoing battle for digital combat supremacy. I am not sure why it ever had to end, but it did, and I am sad. The memories linger, and they are magnificent.
Capcom’s Street Fighter II wasn’t just a game, it was a religion. You were devoted to your branch of the religion, the branch being the favoured character. You worked endlessly on unlocking and perfecting endless special moves and combos as you inched your way to mastery.
Mortal Kombat was for morons. People easily impressed by a comically gory finishing move. You know, kids! The pros, the platers, they knew that Street Fighter II is where the real action was at.
Now Paramount Pictures and Legendary are spending big on a live-action adaptation of Street Fighter II, and instead of acting slightly embarrassed of the game and the lore, they are going all in on the insanity.
A new official trailer has dropped. Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!
Street Fighter has a massive cast that includes Cody Rhodes as Guile, Orville Peck as Vega, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Alexander Volkanovski as Joe, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Roman Reigns as Akuma, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, and Eric Andre as Don Sauvage.
Street Fighter opens in cinemas on October 16th.
