Robocop

The New ROBOCOP Is…

…Dan Stevens. The Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Eurovision Song Contest, and The Guest actor will play the newest iteration of Alex Murphy AKA Robocop, for James Wan in his newly greenlit series over at Amazon. This is according to Deadline.

The Conjuring and Aquaman director will direct key episodes. There will be eight episodes in total. Peter Ocko (Lodge 49) is showrunner, and Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett will executive produce. Ed Neumeier, co-creator and co-writer of Paul Verhoeven’s original movie, will also exec produce.

The-Guest

It is rumored that this time around, Murphy will be a soldier who dies in combat before being requisitioned to be the basis for Robocop. This seems to make zero sense, but Hollywood gonna Hollywood, right?

The rest of the story is expected to largely mirror the general plot of the original. Giant tech conglomerate collaborates with the local police department to create robotic police officer to combat rising crime. In the process, a conspiracy is uncovered that reaches right to the top of the city.

Verhoeven’s film is considered an all-time violent sci-fi classic. Draped in satire of American culture and rampant 80s capitalism, it had a number of sequels and TV spin-offs, and even a toy line. There was also the 2014 remake that I maintain is actually slightly underrated, and does a better job than the original with the subject of Murphy’s lingering humanity.

Never going to beat prime, lunatic Verhoeven, though.
