Trailer: CUNK ON CINEMA

Diane Morgan’s deadpan, naive, and hilarious purveyor of reportage, Philomena Cunk, is back.

Originally appearing on various Charlie Brooker TV shows, such as Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe before branching out with the mockumentary series Cunk on Britain, Cunk on Earth, and Cunk on Life, the role earned her creator and actress Morgan nominations for two British Academy Television Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Now, Netflix has premiered the trailer for Cunk on Cinema, a three-part mockumentary comedy series from Brooker (Black Mirror) and directed by Al Campbell.

This series will explore the history of the cinematic form with Cunk interviewing a panel of experts from across the industry. She will investigate the history of cinema, from the invention of the camera, to the New Wave filmmakers of the 60s, right up to the advent of CGI and what the future of AI holds. The press release says Cunk will:

“…attempt to demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?”

Those appearing will include director Michael Bay, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, writer Steven E. de Souza, critic/historian Mark Kermode, composer Daniel Pemberton, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey and more. I suspect that only some of these will be in on the joke.

Cunk on Cinema lands in the UK on November 12th on iPlayer and then worldwide on Netflix on November 15th.
