Mike Flanagan seems to be a one man conveyor belt of horror for the past few years. Now, his newest movie, The Exorcist: Martyrs, has a trailer.
This does look pretty good, but you could also say from the trailer that it looks generic and like a mild action movie rather than something related to one of the most famous horror movies of all time.
The Exorcist: Martyrs stars Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, Diane Lane, John Leguizamo, Samantha Sloyan, Lawrence Fishburne, Carl Lumbly, and of course, Kate Siegel, Flanagan’s wife. The story:
A determined rookie detective eager to establish herself confronts a horrifying darkness that challenges her deepest convictions and tests everything she thought she knew about right and wrong.
Now, I have a confession here. I was under the impression that this new Exorcist was a direct remake of the original. However, from the synopsis of the story, and this trailer, it looks nothing like the original.
I also completely forgot that Blumhouse have already made an Exorcist movie: Believer, in 2023. They had planned a new franchise from the series, having bought the rights for $400 million.
The reception for The Exorcist: Believer was not good, and the director, David Gordon Green, stepped back from a planned sequel. Instead, we get Flanagan’s new Exorcist movie that is not a direct sequel or reboot, but is set in the same universe.
The Exorcist: Martyrs will be in cinemas on 7th March 2017.
