Here is my synopsis for Spider Island from viewing the trailer: a launch event for a new resort on a tropical island is invaded by a particularly nasty invasive species: influencers.
Spider Island is a new British comedy horror directed by Christopher Smith. Smith previously directed Triangle, The Black Death, Severance (no, not that one) and Creep.
The spiders might be the good guys this time. At the very least, we can take some perverse pleasure in watching some of the worst people on Earth getting their well-deserved arachnid related comeuppance.
At one point in the trailer, an influencer threatens the hotel with a one-star review. He should have followed it up with this:
“If I could leave zero stars, I would!”
Maybe they are saving that punchline for the movie.
Like upcoming spider movie Crawlers, Spider Island features regular sized spiders rather than the giant variety, but don’t rule out the possibility of a sizeable Queen making a surprise third act appearance.
The poster below suggests the appearance of a larger spider, but as we all know, posters can be absolute lying bastards.
One of the few non-influencer characters appears to be Clara, played by Rose Williams. Clara is some kind of environmental activist investigating the resort’s dodgy building practices. So… influencers and activists. I’m still rooting for the spiders. And the dog.
Spider Island also features Tim McInnerny (Captain Darling from Blackadder) and a load of annoyingly beautiful people played by Andy Nyman, Avani Gregg, Owen Warner, Lena Mahfouf, Divian Ladwa, Abraham Lewis, Carlotta Banat, Justin Daniels Anene, Anuschka Van Lent and Jake Francois.
